Frequently asked questions
Planning your stay at Gîte du Survenant? Here are a few practical details to help you prepare.
Arrival & departure
How does contactless check-in work?
Everything is arranged before you arrive. We send you your door code and arrival instructions in advance, so there is no lobby queue, reception stop or paperwork to deal with when you get here.
From your agreed check-in time, simply let yourself in with your code, head to your room and settle in. After a long journey, you can get straight to relaxing. Regular check-in starts at 4 p.m.; an earlier arrival must be arranged with us in advance.
Can I leave my luggage at the property?
Yes. You’re welcome to leave your luggage in the kitchen and dining area on the main floor. Access is controlled by a door code, and you can return later to collect your bags using your code. The area is under video surveillance, but we strongly recommend keeping valuables with you.
Can I check in early?
Regular check-in starts at 4:00 p.m. (16:00). A 2:00 p.m. (14:00) check-in may be arranged for an additional C$13, subject to availability and advance confirmation. Contact us before your stay so we can coordinate the arrangements. If your room is not ready, you’re welcome to leave your luggage in the kitchen on the main floor.
Can I check out late?
A late checkout until 12:00 p.m. (noon) may be arranged for an additional C$13, subject to availability and advance confirmation. Please contact us before your scheduled checkout so we can coordinate the housekeeping schedule. You’re welcome to leave your luggage in the kitchen on the main floor and collect it later with your door code.

At the gîte
Will I have access to a kitchen?
Yes. Every room has access to a full kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, toaster and everything you need to prepare a meal, including utensils, cutlery, plates, pots and pans.
Is guest laundry free?
Yes. Guest laundry is free on the main floor, and we provide detergent. The machines are available every day from 9 a.m., during daytime hours only. They are switched off at night to keep the house quiet for other guests.
Is the Wi-Fi suitable for Zoom or Teams calls?
Yes. Our Wi-Fi is suitable for work video calls, including Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
What is a “survenant”?
A survenant is a newcomer who joins a group, their origins unknown.
Our gîte takes its name from Le Survenant by Germaine Guèvremont, a classic of Quebec literature. A wanderer arrives at the Beauchemin family’s home in Chenal du Moine. Handsome, strong and mysterious, he is immediately nicknamed the Survenant.
Some are wary of him; others admire his free spirit, intelligence, sensitivity and work ethic. Angélina falls in love with him. For Didace Beauchemin, he embodies the strong, hardworking son he had hoped for.
Open to the world and ready to question tradition, this character represents modernity and freedom in the rural Quebec society of the early 20th century.
